Metagenomic Sequencing
Service Description

Metagenomics is the study, using next generation whole genome sequencing, of the entire genetic content of all microbio members in a specific environment. Metagenomics allows direct genetic analysis of microbial genomes isolated from a wide variety of environments, and across a wide variety of applications, including:

  • the Human Metagenome
  • metagenomics in cancer research
  • metagenomics and the human gut microbiome
  • viral metagenomes
  • metagenomics in the food and pharmaceutical industries
  • environmental metagenomics

By offering direct access to the entire genetic make-up of microbial communities, metagenomics can provide valuable molecular insights into novel enzymes and biocatalysts, as well as into genomic linkages between community function and structure.

BGI has particular expertise in environmental metagenomics, which is the study of organisms in a microbial community based on analyzing the DNA within an environmental sample. Environmental metagenomics study data can be used for agricultural microbiome analysis, ecological remediation, or other biological investigations.
