INFORMATION BROCHURE OF 2021 BGI GENOMICS ANZ GENETIC SERVICE GRANT
Grant Background

BGI Genomics is dedicated to facilitating cutting-edge research in healthcare for the benefit of mankind. To catalyse ANZ genomics innovation, BGI is pleased to announce a Genetic Service Grant in the Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) region to support genomics project that advances human translational health research by providing free sequencing services valued at up to AUD 15,000.

The grant comprises comprehensive sequencing services which support genomics project in areas such as (but not limited to) cancer research and precision medicine study, reproductive health study, rare disease study, translational and clinical applications of whole-genome sequencing or whole-exome sequencing.

The grant is open to ANZ genomics researchers, pharmaceutical companies, genetic testing companies, private pathology groups or other applicants from academia or the industry that aim to contribute their innovative research or application to human translational health.

All applicants will have the opportunity to discuss their project needs with a BGI specialist and avail themselves of exclusive special offers and significant discounts on BGI genomics’ sequencing solutions.

Application Timeline
  • 11st November: Call for Application Announcement
  • 10th December: Deadline for Application
  • 11st – 16th December: Application Assessment
  • 17th December: Results Announcement
  • 25th January: Approximate Date of Project Commencement*

* The project commencement date refers to the signing date of the research agreement.

 

Application Eligibility

Genomics research scientists in all career stages who are affiliated with any university or research institution are eligible for application. They include:

  • applicants who hold primary research positions
  • postdoctoral researchers
  • high degree by research (HDR) students (PhD candidates and Honours students)

Pharmaceutical or genetic testing companies, private pathology groups, and other industry applicants that aim to develop innovative research or application in human health are also eligible for the application.

Applicants should disclose all current rewards directly related to the proposed projects.

If selected, the DNA samples must be extracted and QC’d by the applicant and must meet the Demo Lab’s sample submission requirements.

 

Assessment Criteria and Process 

All submissions will be assessed by BGI panel judges independently based on:

  • Eligibility
  • Feasibility
  • Technical capability
  • Research merits
  • Academic influence
  • Commercial value

Rewards for Finalists

Through a meticulous assessment process, the committee will select four finalists. For two of them, we will mutually establish a collaborative research agreement that addresses sample shipping, material transfer, data ownership, and intellectual property (IP) issues as appropriate to the project (First Prize- AU$15,000, Second Prize- AU$10,000). The other two will be awarded a consolation prize, a voucher that offers 25% off of the full price of BGI Genomics’ sequencing solutions. The voucher will be valid till 18th March 2022. The list of all the finalists will be released on 17th December 2021.

Please complete the Application Form and send it back to bgi-australia@genomcis.cn with the 2021 BGI Genomics ANZ Genetic Service Grant Application + Applicant’s Initial.

The deadline is 11:59 PM (GMT+11), 10th December 2021.

 

Terms and Conditions

1. By submitting an application, the applicant gives permission to the sponsors to contact the applicant regarding their products and services, whether or not the applicant is chosen as a successful recipient of the grant.

2. The grant cannot be combined with other discounts, offers, or promotions.

3. The grant may not be transferred or assigned; no substitutions or cash equivalents are allowed.

4. Upon award of the grant, the successful applicant agrees to provide the sponsors with the permission to release the subject of the grant winner’s application and experiment results as part of a case study/poster/press release. More details will be communicated in the grant winner announcement.

5. The successful applicant agrees to:

a) carry out the projects diligently and competently and in accordance with generally accepted professional, scientific and ethical principles and standards;

b) provide samples by 28th February 2022;

c) provide any report on the projects as reasonably requested by the sponsors;

d) separately assign or give licence of intellectual property developed in the projects to the sponsors (or such other entity nominated by the sponsors).

6. Subject to clause 5 and any disclosure in academic publication agreed by the sponsors, the successful  applicant agrees to treat as confidential all confidential information received by the successful applicant in the course of carrying out the projects.

7. The sponsors may, without their rights being limited, terminate the grant process and/or the projects if an applicant breaches these terms and fails to remedy any breach within 30 days of a notice by the sponsors
