Transforming COVID-19 Testing and Research in Sinai Health System/University Health Network

Transforming COVID-19 Testing and Research in Sinai Health System/University Health Network

Dr. Tony Mazzulli, Microbiologist-in-Chief, and Ms. Christine Bruce, Administrative Director from the Department of Microbiology, will discuss the rapid scaleup of testing capacity to address the spread of virus throughout the population with the loss of epidemiologic risk factors such as travel history.

You will learn:

  • How the changes in testing criteria and government policy quickly increase testing demand
  • How the lab testing capacity is going to expand from 650 to 17,500 tests per day
  • The role of MGISP-960 and MGISTP-7000 automation systems in driving the lab to deliver the largest testing capacity in Ontario

Also, Dr. Rod Bremner, Senior Scientist at Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, will explain how the BGI SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR and MGI robotic systems are being used to help develop POC and lab-based tests and to initiate a clinical trial to monitor infection rates in a hospital research institute.

You will learn:

  • A clinical trial that assesses whether photodynamic therapy might reduce patient viral load
  • A clinical trial using robotic testing that assesses “2nd wave” infections in research institutes
  • How POC tests, being developed with LAMP or Toehold switches, compare to gold standard BGI tests
